Mass spectrometry (MS)
A method that measures the mass-to-charge ratio of molecules. A measured mass that matches the calculated mass supports a peptide's identity.
In the lab
A deviation of a few tenths of a dalton is normal on common instruments. Shifts of 16 Da or of one amino acid's mass point to oxidation or a deletion sequence.

- AggregationPeptide molecules clumping together, often with hydrophobic sequences.
- Amino acid analysisA method in which the peptide is fully hydrolysed and the individual amino acids are measured.
- Area percentThe unit of HPLC purity: the main peak's area divided by the area of all peaks.
- ChromatogramThe curve an HPLC run produces: detector signal over time.
- CounterionThe ion that balances the charge of a peptide salt, such as trifluoroacetate or acetate.
- DeamidationA degradation route in which asparagine or glutamine lose their amide group.
